Three men to be sentenced over €440m cocaine haul
Wednesday, 23 July 2008
The three Englishmen who were convicted of involvement in the country's biggest-ever cocaine seizure are due to be sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court later today.
Martin Wanden, Joe Daly and Perry Wharrie, who are all in their 40s, were each found guilty of three charges in relation to the €440m drugs haul in Dunlough Bay, west Cork, in July of last year.
A boat carrying 62 bales of cocaine broke down in the bay after diesel was mistakenly put in its petrol engine.
The three men were arrested and charged following the seizure.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges against them when the trial began in May.
A fourth man, 24-year-old Gerard Hagan was also arrested following the seizure, but he admitted involvement at the beginning of the trial and is due to be sentenced in November.
