Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has said he disagreed with his brother's fight against extradition to face child sex abuse allegations.

Liam Dominic Adams turned himself into authorities in the Irish Republic on Thursday after a European Arrest Warrant was issued by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

The 54-year-old is wanted for questioning in Belfast over claims he sexually abused his daughter.

But claiming he will not get a fair trial in the North, he told Dublin's High Court he plans to contest his extradition.

Gerry Adams described it as a "desperate situation" and signalled he wanted his brother handed over to the PSNI.

"Of course I don't agree with it. I don't agree with any of that," he said. "All of this is going to be a dreadful, difficult situation for as long as that process continues."

Speaking after the Sinn Fein ard fheis (annual conference), Mr Adams told RTE radio he hadn't spoken to his brother Liam for two years.

He said he wouldn't wish the trauma being endured by his family on his worst enemy.

Liam Adams is wanted in relation to 18 offences against his daughter, Aine Tyrell, from March 1977 to March 1983, including allegations of rape, indecent assault and gross indecency.

He denied the allegations when arrested, replying: "I just want to say I'm not guilty of that. I will be pleading not guilty."

What's wrong with wanting a man? I ask because lately I've lost count of the miserable, lonely female celebrities being told by other women that they should stay single.

Seeing is believing when it comes to the justice system

A Bill in the Queen’s Speech will, hopefully, speed up the process of letting some more sunlight into Northern Ireland’s rather musty justice system.

So that's why their pupils were glazed in Play School

Odd period, the 1970s. I've tended to deride them as grim, which they certainly were, but I appreciate now the music and, er, that's about it. They weren't particularly happy years in Northern Ireland.

Tragedy is opportunity for conflict resolution envoys

The Good Friday Agreement is a cure for which there is no known illness. Nowhere in its 11,000 words does it identify the problem which it purports to solve.
