Call for National Museum to take responsibility for archeological excavations.
Thursday, 28 August 2008
Tarawatch has said that the National Museum, and not the National Roads Authority, should be in charge of archaeological excavations near road sites.
The group, which is protesting the route of the M3 near the Tara Skryne site, says that the National Museum has repeatedly criticised the NRA for its handling of national monuments and archaeological excavations.
The NRA's head of archaeology Ronan Swan says that Ireland's heritage has benefited from the work of the NRA and its archaeology section.
'It's a huge undertaking involving lots and lots of individual's. We always seek to minimise the impact of the archaeology, and we always try to reduce the impact, and if we can't avoid that impact, then we try to minimise the impact in accordance with best practises.''
