Galway woman loses manslaughter sentence appeal
Friday, 31 July 2009
The Court of Criminal Appeal has rejected an appeal by a Galway woman against the severity of her nine-year sentence for stabbing her neighbour to death following a row over a puppy.
Twenty-seven-year-old Una Black had claimed the sentence was disproportionate.
Ms Black, formerly of Walter Macken Flats, Mervue in Galway, pleaded guilty last year to the manslaughter of 42-year-old John Malone at that address in December 2006.
Last July at the Central Criminal Court, Mr Justice Paul Carney sentenced her to nine years in prison.
She was heavily pregnant at the time and gave birth shortly after the sentence was imposed.
The Court of Criminal Appeal today dismissed her challenge, stating that the appropriate sentence was handed down given the gravity of the offence.
