Sunday, 15 June 2008
It's understood that the troops became caught up in a clash between the Chadian army and rebels and were fired upon, although it's unclear which side fired the shots.
Irish soldiers returned warning fire from their armoured vehicle.
There were no Irish injuries in the incident which happened near Goz Beida.
"The situation is calm in Goz Beida, the Irish troops have been on patrol in and around Goz Beida town itself and on the perimeters of the refugee camp. There are no clashes or any firing today," said Defence Forces spokesperson Commandant Gavin Young.
