Jury to consider verdict in Steve Collins assault trial
Tuesday, 25 November 2008
The jury in the trial of a former world champion boxer accused of assaulting a bouncer is due to retire to consider a verdict today.
Forty-four-year-old Steve Collins, of Hertfortshire in England, denies assaulting Albanian national Adrialik Voda when he was refused entry into the National Stadium in June 2006.
Yesterday, Mr Collins told the court in evidence that he acted in self defence after Mr Voda lunged at him, having pushed him twice when he tried to get back into the boxing stadium to do his commentary for RTE.
He said Mr Voda's behaviour was menacing and aggressive and, when the bouncer attacked him, he put up his hand in self defence.
The DPP barrister said Collins was left with a bruised ego after he was prevented from going back in and said his elaborate account of what happened was simply not true and he was making it up as he went along.
