New bill to regulate premium-rate phone services
Thursday, 8 October 2009
Premium-rate phone line companies are facing tougher regulation under new legislation presented to the Dail today.
The Communications Regulations Bill will impose strict rules on companies that provide ringtones, wallpapers, games and other subscription services.
The legislation aims to protect vulnerable people such as children and the elderly from signing up for such costly services by mistake.
Communications Minister Eamon Ryan says the bill will tackle rogue operators who are scamming consumers.
