Council warned not to press ahead with incinerator
Tuesday, 2 December 2008
Environment Minister John Gormley has warned Dublin City Council not to press ahead with a controversial waste incinerator on the Poolbeg peninsula.
The council has already secured planning permission to construct one of Europe's largest urban incinerators in the area.
Hundreds of local residents and politicians had objected to the project, including Mr Gormley.
Today, the council was granted a licence for the incinerator by the Environmental Protection Agency.
However, Mr Gormley says it would be unwise to proceed with the scheme before the completion of studies into Ireland's waste infrastructure.
