Fianna Fail TD resigns from party over medical card row.
Friday, 17 October 2008
The government is facing a backbench revolt as opposition grows to the new medical card regulations which end the automatic right to a medical card for over 70's.
Fianna Fail TD Joe Behan has resigned from the party in protest against the measures announced in this week's budget.
The Wicklow deputy who was elected to the Dail last year confirmed his decision this evening in spite of a climbdown by the government which relaxed the income threshold levels
Joe Behan said he was appalled by the removal of the automatic entitlement to the medical card for those over 70 years of age.
Meanwhile Green party backbenchers have also called on the government to rethink the medical card changes.
Green TD Mary White has said the terms of the scheme need to be re-addressed.
