Govt to face more Dail criticism over education cuts
Wednesday, 29 October 2008
The Government is facing into another week of criticism in the Dail over its controversial budget cutbacks.
After widespread protests last week in relation to over-70s medical cards, the attention is set to shift today to education cuts that will lead to reduced teacher numbers and larger class sizes.
A debate will get underway this evening on a Labour Party motion calling for the reversal of the cuts, with a vote due to be taken on the matter tomorrow.
The motion is almost certain to be defeated by the Government as the Green Party has indicated that it will not be breaking ranks with Fianna Fail on the matter.
Teaching unions say the education cuts are completely unwarranted given that Ireland's education system is already seriously under-funded.
