Greens seek to delay NAMA vote until after Lisbon
Monday, 24 August 2009
The leadership of the Green Party is reportedly trying to stall a party vote on the Government's NAMA plans until after the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
Five of the party's constituency groups have called for a special convention to decide the Greens' policy on the plan amid major concerns about the level of risk being taken on by the taxpayer.
September 12th has been proposed as the date for the convention.
However, reports this morning say senior figures in the Greens want that meeting to be purely consultative, with no vote taken until a subsequent convention on October 10th to consider renegotiation of the Programme for Government.
If the Green membership votes against NAMA, the party's TDs will have to reject the plan in the Dail, a move that could collapse the coalition government.
