SF refuses to welcome a visit by British monarch
Monday, 24 March 2008
The party has said that it is strongly opposed to a state visit by any member of the British Royal family.
There is growing speculation that the Queen is to come to Ireland in the next few months.
Sinn Fein TD for North Kerry Martin Ferris insists that his party's position will not create tensions with the British people 'We are expressing our opposition to it because of what the monarchy represents, and what is has been responsible for in Ireland over the decades, I don't believe this is consistent with a visit to Ireland at this point in time.'
