Poll suggests majority would support changed treaty
Monday, 17 November 2008
Irish voters appear to be changing their mind on the Lisbon Treaty, with a new opinion poll showing the agreement could be approved in a second referendum.
Forty-three per cent of respondents to the Irish Times poll said they would vote in favour of the treaty if minor changes were made to take Irish concerns into account.
Thirty-nine per cent said they would still vote 'no'.
When undecided voters are excluded, this gives the 'yes' side 52.5%, compared to 46.6% in last June's referendum.
The Government says it is still examining its options in relation to the treaty, but most observers believe it is planning a second referendum late next year in an effort to overturn the original vote.
