Jarvis Cocker collects the Rising Star at the Sony Radio Academy Awards 2010

Endangered digital station BBC 6 Music has become a double winner at the radio industry's biggest awards event.

Former Pulp singer-turned-presenter Jarvis Cocker won the Rising Star Award at the Sony Radio Academy Awards 2010 for his Sunday afternoon show on the station, which has been earmarked for closure by the BBC.

And presenting duo Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish won the Best Comedy title for their Saturday morning Adam and Joe show at the ceremony staged at London's Grosvenor Hotel.

U2 singer Bono is accustomed to winning prizes for his musical output but tonight he was the unlikely recipient of a broadcasting award when his programme Elvis By Bono - in which he read his beat poet-style ode to the king of rock 'n' roll - was named Best Music Special.

It was one of many awards for Radio 4 at the event, which recognises broadcasting excellence and draws the key players from the world of radio.

Woman's Hour host Jenni Murray's interview with Sharon Shoesmith, the former Haringey children's services director who was axed after the Baby P scandal and later sought compensation, was named Best Interview at the ceremony.

Another Radio 4 programme, Crossing Continents: Chechnya, featuring an interview with human rights worker Natalia Estemirova speaking about women's rights before she was shot dead in the Russian Republic, won Best News Special.

And the station's Archive On 4: Working for Margaret - in which former staff, ministers, civil servants, speechwriters and advisors revealed what it was like to work for Tory Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher - won Best Feature.

The award for Best News and Current Affairs Programme went to the BBC World Service's Newshour.

BBC director general Mark Thompson has proposed the closure of 6 Music under his strategic review of services, prompting a wave of protests from listeners and the music industry. Recent BBC figures have shown that audiences have increased since it was announced the station was under threat in March.

The West is horrified by children's slaughter now. Soon we'll forget

Bashar al-Assad will get away with it. He got away with Deraa. He got away with Homs. And he'll get away with Houla. So will the armed opposition to the regime, along with al-Qa'ida and any other outfits joining in Syria's tragedy.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
