The Irish Film Institute (IFI) will honour achievements of film makers by showing The Secret of Kells, The Door and Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty on Wednesday night.

The Secret of Kells, which stars Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally, is one of five films up for Best Animated Feature and gets its US premiere in Boston on St Patrick's Day.

The joint Irish, French and Belgian production tells the story of an orphan named Brendan who is set the task of completing the Book of Kells and in the process earns a new life of creativity and imagination where adventure, danger and action await him.

Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty and The Door have been nominated in the Best Short Film categories.

It is the second time Brown Bag Films, the Dublin-based animators who devised Granny O'Grimm, have been up for an Oscar. In 2002, the short film Give Up Your Auld Sins was also nominated.

It tells the story of a supposedly sweet old lady who loses the plot as she tells her granddaughter her version of Sleeping Beauty.

Elsewhere The Door, written and directed by Juanita Wilson and produced by Octagon Films, is a powerful tale of life, loss and death set in Chernobyl in 1986.

It was produced by Irish duo Louise Curran and James Flynn from Ardmore-based Octagon Films.

The screenings will be introduced by Sarah Glennie, IFI Director, and will be attended by members of the Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty crew from Brown Bag Films.
