SIPTU to ballot Aer Lingus members on strike action
Tuesday, 7 October 2008
SIPTU will begin balloting its members today on possible industrial action at Aer Lingus.
The union is threatening all-out strike action if the airline tries to impose a €74m cost-cutting plan without the prior agreement of the workforce.
Details of the planned cuts were disclosed to trade union representatives yesterday.
The measures include the outsourcing of the entire Aer Lingus ground operation, which could lead to 1,500 job losses.
Cabin crew bases at Shannon and Heathrow will also be closed, while bases in New York, Boston and San Fransisco will be staffed by American workers.
The IMPACT trade union is meeting today to discuss its response to the move.
