Soup sales soar during cold snap
Saturday, 20 February 2010
Heinz said it sold 57.3 million cans of soup last month compared with 46.6 million cans in January last year - an increase of 10.7 million, or 22.9%.
Sales were highest in London, with cream of tomato the fastest-selling variety.
Heinz spokesman Nigel Dickie said: "In one of the coldest winters Britain has ever seen, it's great to see just how many people have turned to our soups to give them comfort and warmth."
The figures follow pizza delivery firm Domino's reporting a strong start to 2010, which it said reflected the cold weather and the popularity of television shows such as The X Factor.
Like-for-like sales were up 11% in the first six weeks of the year despite the snow causing a large number of stores to cease deliveries.
