Thousands expected to protest against education cuts
Wednesday, 29 October 2008
Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of Dublin today for a protest against controversial budget cutbacks in education.
Teachers and parents are planning a rally outside the Dail to coincide with a Labour Party motion calling for the cuts to be reversed.
The demonstration follows the massive protest by pensioners last week which succeeded in prompting a government climbdown on cutbacks in the over-70s medical-card scheme.
However, Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe is insisting that there will be no changes to the education cuts.
The Green Party has also decided to support the Government on the matter, despite major concerns among grassroots members about the move to shed hundreds of teaching posts and increase class sizes.
