Unions and govt officials to discuss public pay bill
Wednesday, 28 October 2009
Trade union representatives are due to hold further talks with officials from the Department of Finance today about potential savings in the public-sector pay bill.
The two sides are trying to identify changes in work practices and other measures that could reduce the overall bill without cutting the basic pay of public servants.
The Government has indicated that it wants to reduce the overall pay bill by €1.3bn in this December's budget.
A number of public service unions are threatening possible strike action if any move is made to introduce further pay cuts for their members.
Today's talks are aimed at identifying alternative savings such as reductions in overtime and reform of special allowances.
