Tuesday, 15 September 2009
The UN refugee agency says 16 African migrants have died and 49 others are missing after trying to cross the Gulf of Aden in three smugglers' boats.
One of the boats capsized off the coast of Yemen on Sunday.
Most of the passengers managed to swim ashore, but 43 are still missing and one person also suffocated in the boat's engine room.
The UNHCR says 10 people on another boat also died from asphyxiation in the engine room, while another three were beaten to death by the smugglers operating the vessel.
It says two migrants drowned and another six are still missing following the sinking of a third vessel yesterday.
A Belgian warship managed to rescue 38 other passengers from the boat.
