Islamists and Ethiopians fight street battles in Mogadishu

Friday, 20 April 2007

Fresh clashes have broken out in the Somali capital between Islamic insurgents and Ethiopian soldiers who entered the country last year to prop up the weak, UN-backed Government.

Witnesses say heavy fighting has been taking place in northern Mogadishu, but details of the situation are still sketchy.

At least 12 people were killed in clashes between the two sides yesterday, while up to 1,000 were killed earlier this year during several days of all-out warfare in the city.

The UN refugee agency says more than 200,000 have fled their homes in Mogadishu since February.
