Tuesday, 31 March 2009
Hundreds of people are reported to be missing and feared dead following the sinking of a number of migrant boats off the Libyan coast.
At least two boats attempting to transport hundreds of migrants into Italy are believed to have capsized in the past two days.
Libyan officials say 21 bodies were recovered after one boat carrying more than 250 people sank.
Twenty-three people were rescued when the second vessel went down in the same area, but almost 350 others are still missing.
Libya is a popular departure point for African immigrants seeking to be transported illegally into the European Union via Italy.
Tens of thousands are believed to make the perilous journey every year.
