Afghan violence at worst level since US/British invasion
Saturday, 2 August 2008
A coalition of 100 aid agencies says violence in Afghanistan has reached its worst level since the US and Britain invaded the country in late 2001 to overthrow the Taliban regime.
The group says the number of insurgent attacks in May and June was higher than in any month since the start of the invasion.
More than 260 civilians have been killed in the past month alone.
Aid agencies working in the country say they are being forced to curtail their activities due to the deteriorating security situation and this is having a serious impact on ordinary civilians.
Many schools and clinics have closed and significant numbers of people have become internal refugees due to the rising violence.
