Army brigadier killed in Pakistan gun attack

Thursday, 22 October 2009

A high-ranking army officer has been shot dead during a suspected Taliban attack in the Pakistani capital today.

Officials say two gunmen on a motorbike killed the brigadier and another soldier when they opened fire on an army jeep in a residential area of Islamabad.

The shooting was the latest in a series of almost daily attacks by Taliban militants which have killed more than 170 people in the past three weeks.

The upsurge in violence comes as the Pakistani army continues a major offensive against militants in the South Waziristan area, close to the border with Afghanistan.

As the people here are whispering to each other ''the slain women of The Red Mosque have placed a curse on the army hence they are dying one by one as death is following them.''
