North Korea misses nuclear disablement deadline
Monday, December 31, 2007
The United States and Japan have said it is unfortunate that North Korea has missed its December 31st deadline to declare that its Yongbyon nuclear reactor has been disabled.
The country had agreed to disable the reactor in exchange for fuel aid and diplomatic concessions.
Today's deadline was due to end the second part of the nuclear deal which was agreed at talks last February.
The other nations involved in the programme are China, Russia and South Korea.
Earlier this month, U-S President George Bush sent a personal letter to the North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, urging him to honour the pledge made at the six-party talks.
