Burma condemned for stifling cyclone aid effort
Friday, May 09, 2008
The Burmese military government is facing worldwide condemnation as it continues to block aid efforts following the devastating cyclone that killed tens of thousands of people last weekend.
Only one UN aid shipment has been allowed to land in the country since Saturday's disaster.
The death toll is expected to exceed 100,000 and more than a million others are believed to be in dire need of food, medicine and shelter.
The Burmese Government says it wants international aid, but will distribute the aid itself and will not permit foreign aid workers to enter the country.
One aid flight was turned back yesterday because it was carrying a search-and-rescue team and media who had not received permission to enter.
