Islamic group claims responsibility for India attacks

Thursday, May 15, 2008

A previously unknown Islamic militant group has claimed responsibility for a string of bomb attacks that killed at least 61 people in India earlier this week.

The seven bombs, all of which were attached to bicycles, exploded in the historic city of Jaipur on Tuesday.

A group calling itself the Indian Mujahedeen has claimed responsibility in videos and an email sent to Indian television stations and a Hindu nationalist political party.

Officials believe the bombings were designed to stoke tensions between India's Hindu majority and Muslim minority.
