Friday, May 16, 2008
The Chinese authorities say they fear the final death toll from the earthquake that devastated the south-west of the country this week will exceed 50,000.
Almost 20,000 people have already been confirmed dead, but thousands more are still trapped under rubble, with hopes fading that they will be rescued alive.
China has deployed tens of thousands of soldiers to take part in the rescue effort and the search for bodies.
A school pupil was miraculously pulled to safety today after spending around 80 hours trapped without food and water.
