Burma begins three days of mourning for cyclone victims
Tuesday, May 20, 2008
Burma is beginning three days of mourning today for the victims of the cyclone that devastated the country more than two weeks ago.
The official death toll following the storm on May 2nd and 3rd now stands at 78,000, with another 56,000 people still missing.
In recent days, the Burmese Government has relaxed its attitude towards foreign aid teams and has invited the head of the UN to visit the affected area.
It is also preparing to host a meeting of aid donors, but the World Bank says it will not be providing any financial assistance because Burma has been in arrears for 10 years.
