Emergency declared amid protests in Mongolia

Wednesday, 2 July 2008

Mongolia's President has declared a four-day state of emergency in the country's capital following clashes that are believed to have left at least four people dead.

The clashes erupted after thousands of protestors stormed the headquarters of the ruling party, accusing it of fraud in recent parliamentary elections.

The police have fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon at the demonstrators.

The state of emergency decree allows the authorities to use increased force to quell the situation in Ulan Bator, which has been placed under a 10pm to 8am curfew.
