Clinton secures release of American reporters
Wednesday, 5 August 2009
Former US President Bill Clinton has secured the release of two American reporters sentenced to 12 years' hard labour in North Korea.
Laura Ling and Euna Lee, both in their 30s, were handed the punishment in June for illegally entering the country and for engaging in unspecified "hostile acts".
However, they were pardoned overnight by North Korean President Kim Jong-il following a visit to Pyongang by Mr Clinton.
The former US President was asked to undertake the mission by his former vice-president Al Gore, who owns the media company that the reporters were working for.
Ms Ling and Ms Lee are now being flown back to Los Angeles with Mr Clinton.
