Indian stampede death toll continues to climb
Sunday, 3 August 2008
The death toll in a stampede at a temple in northern India has risen to at least one hundred and twenty three people, including thirty children.
The incident happened when iron railings leading down to the site of the Hindu temple broke, causing people to surge forward.
The devotees were attending a nine day religious festival at the Naina Devi Temple in the Bilaspur district.
A cable car was used to ferry down the dead and wounded and helicopters were flown in to help with rescue efforts at the remote temple in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Police said that during the crush, a railing on the path leading up to the mountain collapsed, sending dozens of people plummeting downwards.
