Security tightened ahead of Afghan election
Wednesday, 19 August 2009
Security is being tightened in Afghanistan as voters prepare to go to the polls tomorrow for a much-anticipated presidential election.
The Taliban have already been seeking to disrupt the election and have threatened to target voters and polling stations.
Officials admit that around one-third of the country is at high risk of a militant attack.
Outgoing president Hamid Karzai is currently topping the opinion polls, but is facing a strong challenge from former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah.
Mr Karzai is not expected to secure an overall majority, which would set up a run-off vote between himself and Dr Abdullah.
