Strong earthquake injures more than 100 in Japan
Thursday, 24 July 2008
More than 100 people have been injured in a powerful earthquake in northern Japan today.
The 6.8-magnitude tremor triggered landslides and cut power to more than 8,000 homes after striking shortly after midnight local time.
Most of the injured suffered cuts and bruises as a result of broken glass and falling objects.
However, nobody suffered life-threatening injuries.
Bullet trains were suspended in some areas following the quake, but the authorities say local nuclear stations continued operating after inspections found no problems.
