Tibetan exiles consider new independence strategy
Tuesday, 18 November 2008
Tibet's government-in-exile is considering the possibility of adopting a new strategy in their campaign for greater freedom from China.
More than 500 Tibetan leaders are holding talks this week in the first major re-evaluation of their "middle way" strategy, which pushes for autonomy rather than outright independence.
They are expected to push for full independence if this week's meeting decides to drop the path of compromise promoted by the Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama has expressed frustration during years of fruitless talks with China and prominent Tibetan leaders say the conciliatory approach has failed.
