UK and US welcome new Pakistan president
Sunday, 7 September 2008
Britain and the US have welcomed the appointment of Benazir Bhutto's widower as the new president of Pakistan.
Asif Ali Zardari has replaced Pervez Musharraf, who resigned last month.
He takes over a country seen as being on the front line of the US-led War on Terror, but wracked by violence from Islamic insurgents.
Yesterday, at least 30 people died in a Taliban car bombing near Peshawar.
Mr Zardari's late wife was assassinated last year.
