Australian couple avoid prison term over 'mercy killing'
Wednesday, 4 April 2007
An Australian couple have avoided a prison term after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of their son in a so-called "mercy killing".
Sixth-three-year-old Raymond Sutton and his 60-year-old wife Margaret pleaded guilty last year to killing 28-year-old Matthew, who was blind and mentally disabled.
Prosecutors had sought prison sentences for the couple, but the presiding judge allowed them walk free from court, saying their actions were "born of love".
