Rapists get jail terms in Australian appeal court
Friday, 13 June 2008
An Australian appeal court has overturned a judge's decision not to jail three men and two teenagers who raped a 10-year girl in a remote Aboriginal community.
The five, aged between 13 and 25, had pleaded guilty to the rape in mid-2006, but the judge in the case decided not to send them to jail.
The decision sparked an outcry across Australia and an appeal court has now jailed the adults for six years and the two boys to one year and 18 months respectively in juvenile detention.
Four other teenagers who also pleaded guilty to the crime were given three years probation.
