PM Howard concedes defeat in Australian election
Saturday, 24 November 2007
The opposition Labour Party led by Kevin Rudd has won a sweeping victory in yesterday's election after promising major changes to policies on global warming and the Iraq War.
Howard, Australia's second-longest serving leader, appeared almost unassailable a year ago.
However, he is now one of a number of government politicians in danger of losing his parliamentary seat.
Official figures show Labour far out in front with around 60% of the ballots counted and heading for a comfortable majority in the lower house of parliament.
