Far-right group to get full recognition in EU Parliament

Monday, 15 January 2007

A new far-right political grouping is due to get formal recognition in the European Parliament today when MEPs from Romania and Bulgaria are officially welcomed to the chamber.

The two countries became EU members on January 1st.

Six of their 53 MEPs are due to join the far-right Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty group, which says its mission is to defend Christian values, European civilisation and the traditional family unit.

The group includes French National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, the grand-daughter of the late Italian fascist dictator Alessandro Mussolini and the UK Independence Party MEP Ashley Mote.

The arrival of the Bulgarian and Romanian members will give it the numbers it needs to quality for full recognition, EU funding, speaking rights in the parliament and seats on key committees.
