McCann father named as suspect one day after mother
Saturday, 8 September 2007
Both of Madeleine McCann's parents have been named as formal suspects in her disappearance.
Gerry McCann was officially named as an 'arguido' one day after his wife.
The couple's lawyer is stressing that Portuguese police have imposed no bail conditions or charges.
Kate McCann said detectives have asked her directly if she killed the four-year-old.
It has also been reported that she was offered a deal to confess to the accidental death of her daughter in return for a lenient prison sentence.
She is said to have angrily rejected the deal.
Family friend Jon Corner said, "I spoke to Kate - she was surprisingly calm. But there was a level of exasperation and frustration in her voice - she realises that while her energies are being taken up by this new line of investigation, nobody is out there looking for Madeleine."
