Fritzl confesses to crimes against daughter

Friday, May 09, 2008

The Austrian man who imprisoned and raped his daughter for 24 years has confessed to his crimes in a statement issued through his lawyer.

Seventy-three-year-old Josef Fritzl says he locked up his teenage daughter in a secret underground living area after she began disobeying rules, smoking and drinking in bars.

Elisabeth, now aged 42, was rescued from the dungeon 10 days ago along with three of the six children she gave birth to during years of sexual abuse at the hands of her father.

Fritzl is due to appear in court today, when judges will decide if he should stay in jail while the case is investigated.

He claims he is insane.
