Eight Afghan immigrants drown off Greek coast
Tuesday, 27 October 2009
Eight people have drowned after a small boat carrying illegal immigrants from Afghanistan hit rocks and sank off the coast of Greece this morning.
Eighteen immigrants were on board the vessel when it smashed into rocks near the island of Lesbos.
Officials say four women and four children drowned in the sea, while the other 10 passengers were rescued from the water.
A Turkish man has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a smuggling gang that ferried the immigrants from the nearby Turkish coast.
