Martin to discuss travel ban on Chernobyl children

Monday, 8 September 2008

The Foreign Affairs Minister is to meet with representatives of the Chernobyl Children's Project in Cork today in an effort to lift the worldwide ban on Chernobyl children travelling abroad.

The Belarusian Government has imposed the ban with immediate effect.

The charity says the embargo will directly hit vulnerable children who need to come here for medical treatment, rest and recuperation.

Since 1991 the charity has brought 17,000 children from the contaminated zones of Belarus to stay with host families.

Founder Adi Roche is to discuss the matter with Minister Michéal Martin later today.
