President Kadyrov defends honour killings

Sunday, 1 March 2009

The President of Chechnya has justified the right of male relatives to carry out 'honour killings' after seven young women were found shot dead.

Ramzan Kadyrov said the women, whose bodies were found dumped by the roadside, had loose morals and were rightfully shot.

The 32-year-old former militia leader describes women as the property of their husbands and says their main role is to bear children.

He also encourages men to take more than one wife and women and girls are required to wear headscarves in all schools, universities and government offices.
