Thursday, 30 April 2009
Switzerland and the Netherlands have become the latest countries to confirm swine flu infections as efforts continue to prevent the spread of the virus.
EU health ministers are meeting in Luxembourg today to discuss their response to the illness and to co-ordinate efforts to prevent a large-scale outbreak.
Yesterday, the World Health Organisation raised its pandemic threat level to phase five, just one short of a full-blown pandemic.
Swine flu is suspected of causing almost 170 deaths in Mexico over the past few weeks, while one death has also been reported in the US.
