Scepticism expressed about Lost Tomb of Jesus claims
Tuesday, 27 February 2007
Scepticism is being expressed about a new documentary claiming that tombs uncovered in Jerusalem 27 years ago contained the remains of Jesus and Mary Magdelene.
The Oscar-winning director James Cameron has produced the new Lost Tomb of Jesus documentary, which is due to be broadcast on the Discovery Channel in the coming weeks.
The makers claim DNA and statistical analysis support their belief that the 10 tombs contained the remains of Jesus and his family.
They say one of the tombs contained Mary Magdelene, suggesting she may have been Jesus's wife, while another was inscribed "Judah son of Jesus".
However, scholars and theologians are expressing scepticism about the claims, saying the names inscribed on the tombs were very common at the time.
