Ceasefire under threat after Israeli killings in West Bank

Monday, 23 April 2007

The five-month old ceasefire between the Israelis and Palestinians appears under threat today following Israeli raids over the weekend that killed nine Palestinians

The victims of the West Bank raids included a 17-year-old youth that the Palestinians say was throwing stones at Israeli military vehicles.

The Israelis claim he was about to throw at firebomb at their forces.

Hamas has responded to the killings by calling for retaliatory attacks, something that could threaten the five-month ceasefire that has largely been holding in the Gaza Strip.

The rival Fatah party has also called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to consider breaking off his contacts with the Israeli Government.

It says Israel's actions are undermining efforts to strengthen the Gaza truce and expand it to the West Bank.
