Govt removes army and police commanders in Basra
Wednesday, 16 April 2008
The Iraqi Government has removed the top military and police commanders in the southern city of Basra.
The move come weeks after a botched attempt to crack down on the Mehdi Army militia, which has widespread influence in the oil-rich city.
The Iraqi Government is claiming the army and police commanders dispatched to the city last year are being recalled to Baghdad as a reward for their "successful" mission against criminals in Basra.
Last week, the Government fired 1,300 soldiers and police for failing to stand and fight during the attempted crackdown on the Mehdi Army.
