Israel accused of reckless force in Gaza assault
Wednesday, 15 July 2009
An Israeli human rights group is accusing the country of using reckless force during its massive military attack on the Gaza Strip earlier this year.
The group, Breaking the Silence, has collected testimonies from soldiers who participated in the assault.
They say they demolished homes for no reason and used firepower beyond what was necessary given the relatively light resistance they encountered.
The Israeli military has rejected the accusations and has accused the group of defaming the Israeli Defence Force and its commanders.
Gaza officials say at least 1,400 people, including at least 900 civilians, were killed during the three-week Israeli offensive.
